The department was established in 1994 under the leadership of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Ivan Danylovych Rachynsky on the site of the Sumy Regional Hospital for the Veterans.
Rachynsky Ivan Danylovych is the author of more than 200 scientific works, supervised by a doctor of medical sciences, professor, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, founder of the Kharkiv school of therapists Mala Lyubov Trokhimivna. He received the award of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine for the monograph “Chronic heart failure” (1994).
In October 1996, the Therapy Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Orlovsky Victor Feliksovich. Since September 2003, the department has been training interns in the specialties of “Therapy” and “General Practice – Family Medicine”.
In 2005 the Department of Therapy was reorganized into the Department of Internal Medicine with a course of propaedeutics of internal medicine, in 2012 – the Department of Internal Medicine of postgraduate education, in 2020 – the Department of Internal Medicine with Respiratory Medicine Center.
During the period of the department’s work, it included courses: radiation diagnostics and radiation medicine (managed by associate professor Kondrachuk SO); endocrinology (managed by associate professor Melekhovets OK); skin and venereal diseases (managed by MD, Prof. Bocharov VA), tuberculosis (managed by MD, Prof. Duzhiy ID); occupational diseases.
Since June 2007 the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Prystupa Lyudmila Nikodimovna.
The Department of Internal Medicine with Respiratory Medicine Center is one of the largest departments of the Medical Institute, which teaches the following disciplines: internal medicine for masters, internal medicine for interns, thematic training courses “Topical issues with ECG” and pre-certification cycles of therapy.
Teachers of the department are working on the implementation of research “Improvement of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of internal organs”, registration number: 0121U108891.
The department is located on 6 clinical bases, where teachers of the department carry out clinical and diagnostic work.
